Improved access to dementia services vital, say neuropsychologists

Fiona Phillips’ husband Martin Frizzell is campaigning for greater access to dementia services for everyone in the country.

Responding to Martin Frizzell's calls for improved access to dementia services for assessment and aftercare, Chair of the BPS's Division of Neuropsychology Policy Unit Dr Najma Khan-Bourne said:

"People who might have Alzheimer's need swift access to diagnostic and support services, including clinical neuropsychology. This enables accurate and timely diagnosis and appropriate management of their care. It is equally important that their families receive support and should not be forgotten during the process.

"However, there is currently a postcode lottery for support across the country, with some areas facing a wait of up to a year for diagnostic assessments and patchy access to specialist clinical neuropsychology assessment. We strongly urge the government to invest in expanding these services at the earliest opportunity, so that patients and their families can access the timely care they need and deserve."
